A group of Peruvians residing on Chineria Island, in Loreto region, sang the national anthem and raised the country's flag, reaffirming Peru's sovereignty over this territory.

The compatriots carried Peruvian flags. Some were dressed in the marinera costume, the traditional dance attire from northern Peru.

"Long live Peru, we are Peruvians at heart," said one of the residents who took part in this brief ceremony.

"I am Peruvian, I am on Peruvian soil," another resident of Santa Rosa told TV Peru.

Chineria Island is under the protection of the Peruvian Armed Forces, whose members carry out both land and river patrols in the area.

Following statements by Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding the Santa Rosa area, the Peruvian government reaffirmed Peru's sovereignty over this territory, based on international treaties signed by both countries.
