This instrument seeks to facilitate the growth of tourist flows between the two countries, encourage direct contact involving their tourism authorities, promote technological innovation in the sector, as well as foster a continuous exchange of knowledge and experiences related to the use and conservation of natural and cultural resources.
Furthermore, it aims to facilitate interaction between experts and professionals in the sector, with the goal of strengthening human capital capacities in tourism through educational and technical processes that enrich the development of both markets.
Among the main benefits of the agreement is the possibility of designing joint actions to attract a greater number of Japanese tourists to Peru, a strategic source market known for its high average spending, extended stays, as well as preference for cultural, gastronomic, and nature-based experiences.
In this regard, this international instrument also represents an opportunity to identify Japanese best practices adaptable to the Peruvian context, such as the use of artificial intelligence in tourism promotion, visitor flow management, or mechanisms for preventing environmental impacts.
The memorandum establishes a non-binding collaboration platform aimed at strengthening travel ties between both countries, with a special emphasis on boosting sustainable tourism, technical exchange, and joint destination promotion.
During the first half of this year, 10,712 Japanese tourists visited Peru, representing a slight increase of 0.5% compared to the same period in 2024 (10,664 visitors).
Throughout 2024, 21,042 Japanese visitors arrived, an 86% increase compared to 2023 (11,290), showing a strong recovery; however, the tourist flow has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.
