The Ministry of Production (Produce) and the South Korean company HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a memorandum of understanding on strategic cooperation to strengthen the value chain of Peru's shipbuilding industry.

This agreement will focus on technology transfer, innovation, and capacity building to benefit the South American country's micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

"We are working to strengthen the national industry so that MSMEs can participate in this sector with the required quality levels," Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez stressed.

Likewise, the Cabinet member underscored that this objective is reflected in the areas covered by the memorandum of understanding, such as fostering the supply chain, boosting innovation, advancing technological and digital development, strengthening technical and product-related capacities, and, finally, reinforcing the regulatory framework.

The agreement establishes an active cooperation mechanism between the public and private sectors, which will foster the national supply chain by integrating MSMEs as strategic suppliers in the shipbuilding industry.

This cooperation also includes technology transfer, attracting investments, training specialized human capital, and the exchange of scientific and technological information on global shipbuilding trends.

The signing of this memorandum reinforces the Production Ministry's vision of promoting productive diversification and integrating MSMEs into global value chains in highly specialized sectors such as the shipbuilding industry.

This agreement is part of the policy to strengthen national maritime and logistics infrastructure, recognizing Peru's importance as a country with a strategic location in the South (American) Pacific region.

The development of a modern shipbuilding industry not only impacts the competitiveness of foreign trade but also contributes to the creation of skilled jobs and the stimulation of various sectors linked to the production chain.

"At Produce, we will continue boosting ProInnóvate's competitive funds and the ITP's technology transfer to close innovation and technology gaps in our companies, in conjunction with major infrastructure projects such as the Chancay-Callao Port hub, the new Jorge Chavez International Airport, and the Ancon Industrial Park, which generate quality jobs and more opportunities for Peruvians," Minister Gonzalez highlighted.

Furthermore, cooperation with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will enable Peruvian companies to access international standards of innovation and sustainability, enhancing their capacity to participate in large-scale projects.

Thus, the Ministry of Production aims to work with and consolidate a strong, sustainable, and forward-looking shipbuilding industry alongside the public and private sectors, contributing to economic growth and Peru's integration into global markets.

The event was attended by Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez; South Korean Ambassador to Peru, Choi Jong-Uk; Peruvian Navy General Commander, Admiral Javier Bravo de Rueda; and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Representative Kim Doing-il; as part of a high-level meeting between the two entities.

On the other hand, the Production minister emphasized that this memorandum of understanding signed with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries takes place within the framework of strengthening the relations established at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru.

The Cabinet member stated that Peru has become a logistical hub in the region and therefore needs to develop the shipbuilding industry, not only focused on the construction of warships but also on scientific and fishing vessels.

Moreover, he announced that, in collaboration with the Navy Industrial Services (SIMA), the first scientific vessel will be built in Peruvian shipyards.
