Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer highlighted the importance of the Executive Branch's proposal to Congress to authorize President Dina Boluarte's trip to Japan and Indonesia, where she is scheduled to carry out a series of activities to strengthen relations between Peru and both countries.

Precisely, the Government submitted a request to the Legislative Branch on Wednesday to authorize the Head of State to leave the national territory from August 5 to 12 in order to carry out these official visits.

The minister noted that the itinerary begins in Japan, home to more than 50,000 Peruvians, while in the South American country the Nikkei community is made up of nearly 200,000 citizens.

"Therefore, it is a timely moment to strengthen diplomatic and political relations, but also economic and trade ties with Japan," he stated at a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting.

The diplomat mentioned that the invitation to the top official to visit Japan was extended by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during his visit to Peru in November last year, within the framework of APEC 2024.

Regarding her agenda, he highlighted that Mrs. Boluarte will hold an important meeting with the Peruvian-Japanese Business Council, where she will meet with business leaders from the host country interested in investing in Peru. She will be accompanied by State ministers for this purpose.

Likewise, the ambassador mentioned that the Head of State will have a special audience with Emperor Naruhito. He noted that such audiences are not common, making this a particularly special gesture.

"And then, from there, the President will travel to the city of Osaka, where the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai is being held, to take part in the inauguration of Peru Day," Schialer stated.

"This is also very important, as the pavilion is highly visited and widely appreciated for everything it features, including, of course, Peruvian cuisine," he added.

Agreement with Indonesia

Regarding the next destination, Minister Schialer mentioned that trade meetings will take place in Indonesia as well.

Similarly, the government official highlighted that a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with that country is ready to be signed.

"Once we gain access to Indonesian markets, it will actually mean a two-, three-, four-, even five-fold increase in Peruvian exports to the Asian region," he emphasized.

Moreover, the diplomat noted that the signing of the agreement will lead to greater investment and more jobs.

Lastly, he stated that the members of the Congressional leadership are already reviewing when the Executive Branch's proposal could be assessed, and that he will appear before Congress to present the request to the plenary, should they choose to summon him.
