According to estimates from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), air activity —measured through the operating revenues of concessionaires and the wages of staff at concessioned airports— made a positive contribution to regional economies in 2024.

Deputy Economy Minister Erick Lahura specified that air transport generated around 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributed 0.25% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024.

"Our estimates show that a 10% increase in operating revenues raises the GDP growth rate by nearly half a percent and the employed economically active population by 0.1%. These are very significant impacts," he stated.

Within the framework of the establishment of the Air Connectivity Subgroup, Deputy Minister Lahura highlighted that the largest contributions to real GDP growth were recorded in Cusco, San Martin, Ucayali, and Lima.

The subgroup is composed of the Ministries of Economy and Finance, Foreign Trade and Tourism, Transportation and Communications, and private sector representatives.

"These regions concentrate a high flow of domestic and international tourists as well as greater commercial activity, favored by their strategic location as regional connection hubs," he noted.

The deputy minister emphasized that this dynamism generates multiplier effects in related activities such as commerce, hospitality, gastronomy, and tourism services, consolidating air transport as a driver of local economic growth.

It is worth noting that, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), national air activity directly contributed 0.4% to GDP in 2023 and generated over 36,000 jobs.

Furthermore, taking into account the direct and indirect effects linked to regions’ proximity, a 10% increase in the sector’s operating revenues could generate a 0.82% rise in regional GDP growth, and a 0.24% increase in the employed economically active population, equivalent to 42,000 additional jobs.

"The scope of this activity goes beyond passenger transport: it strengthens regional connectivity, expands access to markets and tourist destinations, and energizes key sectors of the economy," Lahura stated.

"Its multiplier effect drives new opportunities for trade and investment, enhancing regional competitiveness and promoting sustainable productive diversification," he added.

Within this framework, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting investments in airport infrastructure and services, aimed at expanding operational capacity and improving the quality of Peruvian airports.

These actions aim to strengthen both domestic and international connectivity, promote more balanced development across all regions, and contribute sustainably to the population's well-being.
