The
confirmed the death of Serbian national Zoran Jaksic, who was serving a prison sentence at the Maximum-Security Detention Center of the Naval Base in Callao region (CEREC).
On the morning of July 28, the CEREC chief reported that Jaksic had been found dead in his cell, according to an official statement.
"The incident was detected during a routine security round conducted by naval personnel," the communiqué said.
"Upon noticing that the inmate was unresponsive, emergency protocols were activated, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed, but without success. The absence of vital signs was confirmed," it specified.
Authorities immediately notified the Callao Provincial Prosecutor's Office on Duty, the National Police, and CEREC Technical Committee members.
Representatives from the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office) arrived at the facility along with teams from Criminalistics and Legal Medicine.
The prosecutor from the Callao Second Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office ordered the recovery of the body and its transfer to the Callao morgue.
"The INPE and the Peruvian Navy provided full support to the Public Ministry and the National Police to ensure the corresponding proceedings," the statement indicated.
In 2022, the National Superior Court sentenced Zoran Jaksic to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking. It also ordered his expulsion from the country upon completion of his sentence.
Jaksic had been found responsible for transporting an 800-kilogram shipment of cocaine seized by the National Police in 2016.
