Gov't plans partial opening of new Jorge Chavez International Airport for APEC Peru 2024

The Executive Branch plans a partial opening of the new Jorge Chavez International Airport for the central meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to be held in November of this year.

According to Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon, terminal 2 of the new airport might open to receive the bloc member economies.

"The inauguration of the airport is indeed a milestone. It is an extremely modern airport. Terminal 2 is expected to operate during APEC, but only for the economies that will be arriving for the meeting," Leon told TVPeru on September 28.

The Cabinet member said that the new airport's grand opening might take place on December 18, according to estimates by Lima Airport Partners (LAP) -the concessionaire in charge of the terminal expansion works.

"All institutions involved in the opening of the airport, the Ministry of Transportation-Communications (MTC), the Ministry of Interior (Mininter), Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), all of us who have something to do with it are working to ensure that this opening is truly successful and that we can show the world more of what Peru has to offer," she added.

Regarding the APEC 2024 Leaders' Summit to be held soon in Peru, the Mincetur head assured that there is much expectation for the arrival of the presidents from the 21 economies that make up the bloc.

In this regard, he considered that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, might arrive in Peru, after some conversations held with U.S. officials during the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Additionally, the arrival of the President of China Xi Jinping is expected.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.

APEC is made up of: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Together, they account for 62% of world's GDP, 48% of global trade in goods and services, plus 38% of the planet's population.
