FA Minister: Peru reaffirms commitment to strengthened and technical Inter-American system

Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer met with Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Commissioner Carlos Bernal Pulido, emphasizing that Peru reaffirms its commitment to a strengthened Inter-American system.

This information was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the X platform on Wednesday evening.

"Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer met with Commissioner Carlos Bernal Pulido, Peru's candidate for re-election to the IACHR. Peru reaffirms its commitment to a strengthened and technical Inter-American system," the statement said.

According to the government agency, Commissioner Bernal Pulido is a jurist of recognized international standing, with a solid academic background as well as extensive experience in constitutional law and human rights.

"His candidacy advocates for a more independent and effective IACHR," the post added.

The meeting took place following the Minister's participation in the opening session of the 55th Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly in Antigua and Barbuda. There, he also reaffirmed Peru's commitment to multilateralism and hemispheric cooperation.

During these plenary sessions, the OAS member states will debate and agree on commitments related to the Inter-American system, such as democracy, human rights, multidimensional security, and comprehensive development.

Additionally, as part of the aforementioned event, the election of, among others, three members to serve as commissioners of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the 2026–2029 term will take place.
