The
reported that the participation of 10,257 candidates is expected in the 2026 General Elections, if the 39 registered political organizations submit their lists by December 23.
In a press conference,
JNE Chairman Roberto Burneo specified that the preliminary number of hopefuls will be 117 for the presidential ticket and 3,354 for the Senate.
He added that there will be 6,162 aspirants for the Chamber of Deputies and 624 for the Andean Parliament.
"It is estimated that we will have just over 10,257 candidates. It will only be on December 23 that we will know which candidates will actually participate," Burneo explained.
Registered political organizations
"(...) we will have 39 political organizations, made up of 36 political parties and three registered alliances," he indicated.
Electoral schedule
In this regard, Burneo stated that "starting February 11, the list of candidates will be published and the objections phase will be opened."
"The deadline for the exclusion of candidates or lists through objections is February 23," he added.
The challenge of debates
The electoral body chairman acknowledged that the high number of nominees poses a major challenge for organizing the debates.
"There is no comparable experience in the world of organizing a debate with 39 political organizations. We will ensure full and balanced participation for all," Burneo stated.
He also revealed that a preliminary format is being considered: "We are thinking that each political organization could record a video, which would be published simultaneously before the debate to convey ideas without confrontations."
Improper affiliations
Another topic addressed was improper affiliations.
A total of 5,556 requests were submitted between January and September 1, of which 3,157 were accepted, 66 were rejected, and 2,333 are still being processed.
"In just a few months, we have had more than 5,000 improper affiliations, when the annual average was less than 300," Burneo emphasized, noting the magnitude of this problem.
