took part in the meeting with the Afro-Peruvian community held at the Government Palace in Lima on Thursday.
Culture Minister Alfredo Luna participated in this event as well.
During his speech, the top official stated that the Afro-Peruvian community never bowed down and became one of Peru's foundational pillars through their strength, faith, and resilience.
"Your historical and irreplaceable importance is undeniable and deserves our full recognition. What would our country be without your contributions to the fight for independence, to culture, music, literature, and, of course, gastronomy? Therefore, my commitment to you is unwavering," he asserted addressing the attendees.
The President said that protecting memory and fighting all forms of discrimination is a means to ensure that both current and future generations feel proud of their heritage.
"Today, we say zero tolerance for structural and everyday racism, aiming to strengthen policies and mechanisms to report and punish every act of discrimination," he asserted.
The Head of State assured attendees that the government is committed to fostering the economic and social development of Afro-Peruvian communities, thereby closing gaps in health, housing, employment, and education.
President Jeri noted that, if in the past any wrong actions were taken against the Afro-Peruvian community that should never have happened, it is essential to offer an apology.
"And I believe that today it is appropriate to formally ask for that forgiveness from the community, the people, and your representatives," he expressed.
The Head of State reiterated the government's commitment to work firmly on specific actions in response to the Afro-Peruvian community's requests so as to continue advancing their long-neglected demands and expectations.
"In addition, we have here the Culture Minister, who is working responsibly to ensure that the community can reclaim their place of worship in safe and dignified conditions," he said, noting that his administration is committed to granting title deeds to some communities.
The top official also recognized the work of Congress' Afro-Peruvian Working Group, led by Congresswoman Martha Moyano.
