More than 40,000 people with Peruvian roots reside in Canada, in addition to approximately 4,000 Peruvian students, which proves the existing ties between both countries, Canadian Ambassador to Lima, Louis Marcotte, has affirmed.

"Peru and Canada are a good example of two nations that have grown sharing a commitment to democracy, multilateralism, and open markets," the diplomat said in Spanish-language remarks to Andina news agency.

Regarding the presence of Peru's citizens in Canada, the envoy indicated that there are more than 40,000 Canadian residents who have Peruvian roots.

"They are residents in Canada and can, of course, return to Peru because they are Peruvians," he underscored.

Likewise, the envoy indicated that around 3,000 Canadians reside in Peru.

4,000 Peruvian students

Ambassador Marcotte noted that Peru is the country in this region that registers "the largest number of students who travel to Canada."

"There are many facilities for this type of exchange," he said.

The diplomat pointed out that through the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) Peruvians can apply for a scholarship to study in Canada.

This includes tuition, in addition to stay and transportation costs. Peru is one of the countries eligible for the granting of scholarships.

Bilateral relations

The ambassador said that 80 years of the establishment of Peruvian-Canadian diplomatic relations will be celebrated in 2024.

Besides, this year marks the 15th anniversary of the bilateral free trade agreement signing.

In that sense, the diplomat invited citizens to participate in the celebrations to be held.

"We are going to organize cultural, sports, and academic events throughout this year," he announced.

"It is a relationship of friendship between nations, of course, but also of mutual respect," Marcotte concluded.
