Japanese companies invest in Peru's mining and infrastructure sectors

Japan has been an important partner for Peru for several years, Carlos Aquino, Director of the Center for Asian Studies at the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM), stated on Tuesday.

"Japan has been an important partner for many years; it is currently Peru's sixth-largest trading partner, with exports to Japan totaling nearly US$3.3 billion. Until the 1980s, it was the second-largest trading partner," he said in remarks to Andina News Agency.

According to the expert, "Japan is the fourth-largest economy in the world, a technologically-advanced country, and has been investing in Peru for many years in mining and, more recently, in infrastructure construction."

"Let us remember that last year Japan won a government-to-government tender to build a highway connecting northern Amazonas with Loreto (region), approximately 210 kilometers long, at a cost of nearly US$1.3 billion," he added.

Aquino highlighted the role of the Peruvian-Japanese Business Council (Cepeja) for bringing together entrepreneurs from both countries who drive business and bilateral trade.

"For several years, there has been a business council, an association that brings together entrepreneurs from Japan and Peru and meets every two years," he mentioned.

In 2025, during the Peruvian delegation's visit, the council met in Japan to conduct business between the two countries.

"For Peru, visiting important countries, such as Japan and Indonesia, is definitely very beneficial, not only to strengthen diplomatic and political relations but also commercial ties," Aquino added.

The academic reiterated that the Port of Chancay will facilitate Peru's trade with Asian countries, not just China, and therefore these opportunities must be seized.
