Peru: PM urges informal miners to end forceful measure

18:00 | Lima, Jul. 9.

Prime Minister Eduardo Arana on Wednesday urged informal miners staging a strike in various parts of the country to call off their actions, stressing that the right to protest must not infringe on the rights of others.

At a press conference following the Council of Ministers session, he also stated that the Government "will not back down" from the decisions it has made regarding that sector.

As is known, the closure of the mining formalization process was recently made official. It will remain in effect only until December 31, 2025, and will not be extended again.

"To those who remain in this activity, we firmly urge you to change your stance. This is a government that will not back down from the decisions it has made," Arana pointed out.

The Prime Minister stressed that the Government is calling for dialogue and reiterated to informal miners its willingness to support them in their activities, but without losing firmness.

"For a long time, we —or rather, they— have been allowed to operate irregularly, in some cases, informally in the country. It is time for the country to draw a clear line between what is irregular, meaning informal, and to get used to doing what is right," Arana stated.
