'León del Perú': Vatican Documentary on Pope Leo XIV premieres online

The Vatican's documentary about the life of Pope Leo XIV as a missionary in Peru before being chosen as pontiff premiered in three languages on Friday.

It recounts his years of pastoral service in Peru and is now freely available on YouTube.

The feature film, titled "León del Perú," retraces the steps of Robert Francis Prevost, now Leo XIV, during his nearly four-decade journey in Peru. It is available in Spanish, English, and Italian, the Holy See reported.

The documentary traces the Peruvian towns where Prevost lived —Chulucanas, Trujillo, Lima, Callao, and Chiclayo— to explore his path through the voices of various witnesses who describe his persona, as well as his pastoral and social work.

The U.S.-born Pope, who also holds Peruvian nationality, resided 38 years in Peru as a missionary and served as archbishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo before being elected Supreme Pontiff on May 8.

"León del Perú" has versions in Spanish, English, and Italian. It will be broadcast through other international media outlets as well.

The documentary is a production of the Editorial Directorate of the Dicastery for Communication and the Vatican's media services.
