Peru to implement comprehensive strategy against illegal mining

The High Commissioner for the fight against illegal mining, Rodolfo García Esquerre, announced the implementation of a comprehensive strategy, which will cover more than the traditional interdiction operations, focusing on the entire value chain of illegal mining.

Through the social networks of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) it was reported that, starting next year, the Government will launch a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining in the country.

This initiative seeks to go beyond interdiction operations and cover all the links in the value chain of this illicit activity, prioritizing areas such as Madre de Dios, declared in emergency due to the high levels of environmental damage.

Rodolfo García Esquerre explained that this strategy will be carried out through joint work between various State entities, including the National Police of Peru (PNP), the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard (Dicapi) of the Navy, the Army, and the Public Prosecutor's Office through the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Matters (FEMA).

“The new strategy has a much more comprehensive view. It is not only about carrying out interdictions or intervening in 'vocaminas' (illegal mining sites), but also about attacking other parts of the illegal mining value chain,” said García Esquerre.



In this sense, the operations will be aimed at dismantling the logistical and financial networks that support this illicit activity. In addition, priority will be given to strengthening actions in the areas most affected by illegal mining, especially in Madre de Dios, where the environmental and social impact has reached critical levels.

“This action will be carried out mainly by the PNP, the Environmental Directorate, Dicapi and the Armed Forces, in constant coordination with the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office. All operations will be carried out with an inter-institutional approach to guarantee effective results,” the high commissioner stressed.
