Congress ratified by majority vote the agreement between the World Tourism Organization and Peru to hold the 70th UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas in the country, from July 13 to August 2, 2025.

The agreement will benefit the country, as it will have a positive impact on promoting Peru as a regional tourism power, Foreign Affairs Commission Chairwoman Auristela Obando stated.

"It positions us as a global benchmark for organizing major international events, which generate favorable effects on tourism and the development of related industries including hotels, gastronomy, handicrafts, etc.," she pointed out.

Obando explained that the Regional Commission for the Americas has held 69 meetings to date, and Peru has not hosted any of them.

The legislator also highlighted that, through Supreme Decree No. 003-2024-Mincetur, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism declared the holding of this meeting, as well as related activities and events, to be of national interest.

The Foreign Affairs Commission chairwoman explained that, within the framework of this agreement, Peru will commit to granting privileges and immunities to UN Tourism, its Secretary-General, and other officials of the organization.

Lastly, she stated that the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has the necessary budgetary availability to cover the costs involved in holding the meeting, without incurring expenses for the national treasury.
