APEC 2024: Peru to welcome over 15,000 visitors for international forum

10:27 | Lima, Nov. 11.

The organization of the APEC 2024 forum will bring over 15,000 visitors to Peru, generating direct revenue for the nation and stimulating local economies, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Ursula Desilu Leon stated.

"When tourists arrive, they consume local cuisine and crafts," she said in remarks to TVPeru, emphasizing that APEC's favorable impact will be felt immediately through tourism.

In this regard, the government official noted that artisans, within the framework of APEC, will have the opportunity to present their products to the world.

The Cabinet member mentioned that the pre-pandemic figure for inbound tourism was 4.4 million visitors. She added that this year's projection aims to reach 3.5 million.

"Next year, this number will be greatly surpassed during the first half of 2025, which will bring direct economic benefits," Leon commented.

However, she did not rule out the possibility of a record year for inbound tourism, as expectations have risen with the future opening of the new Jorge Chavez International Airport and the Chancay Megaport.

The high-ranking official emphasized that this government is giving a strong boost to community-based and entrepreneurial tourism.

She also noted that tourism accounts for 2.9% of GDP and generates 1.3 million jobs.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
