Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Monday signed the Book of Condolences
in memory of Ambassador Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, who
leaves behind a valuable legacy in service to diplomacy and the country.
The Book of Condolences will be open all week at Torre Tagle Palace in Lima, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the
Foreign Affairs Ministry announced on its social media platforms.
Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, retired Ambassador of the Diplomatic Service and former Foreign Affairs Minister, passed away in Madrid, Spain, on July 4.
As part of his diplomatic career, Garcia Belaunde played a key role in the maritime delimitation process between Peru and Chile.
The diplomat was the one who proposed bringing the case before the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
Later, as former Foreign Affairs Minister, he acted as co-agent in the proceedings, which concluded with a ruling favorable to Peru.
Likewise, he was a key driving force behind the Pacific Alliance, which, in addition to Peru, includes Mexico, Colombia, and Chile, in a joint effort toward economic development and international projection.
Garcia Belaunde served as Foreign Affairs Minister from 2006 to 2011, holding the position without interruption.
Throughout his diplomatic career, he also served at Peru's missions to the United Nations, Mexico, Spain, Ecuador, and the United States.
Garcia Belaunde was honored by the Andean Community with the Order of Merit in the rank of Grand Officer. Until his passing, he served as president of the EU–Latin America and the Caribbean International Foundation.
Following his passing, the Foreign Affairs Ministry opened books of condolences at the Torre Tagle Palace, as well as at all of Peru's embassies and consulates, so that the public may express their appreciation and sorrow.
