In his remarks, the Cabinet chief conveyed the Peruvian Government's appreciation for the outgoing diplomat's work, highlighting his valuable contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.
"Peru and Belgium share a common vision of development, grounded in values such as democracy, the rule of law, and socio-economic progress. In recent years, we have consolidated a mutually beneficial cooperation agenda," he stated.
The ceremony also served to officially introduce Alexandre Massaert as the new Counselor for Economic Diplomacy at the diplomatic mission.
Eight individuals were honored during the ceremony, including Peruvians Juan Carlos Mathews, former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and Dr. Theresa J. Ochoa, a physician and researcher in pediatric infectious diseases, in recognition of their contributions to cooperation between the two countries.
Bilateral relations and cooperation
The relationship between Peru and Belgium is marked by fluid political and diplomatic dialogue, as well as growing cooperation in economic, environmental, cultural, and anti-drug-trafficking efforts.
Bilateral trade exceeded US$896 million in 2024, with a favorable balance for Peru.
Additionally, Belgium is among the countries interested in the coastal protection project in the northern city of Trujillo, promoted by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications under the Government-to-Government (G2G) model.
"We recognize Ambassador Van de Vreken's legacy in strengthening the ties between our nations, and we wish the new Belgian diplomatic team every success in this new phase of joint work for the benefit of our nations," Prime Minister Arana emphasized.
