Peru: Government expresses deep sorrow over death of Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde

The Government of Peru expressed its deep sorrow over the passing of Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, a distinguished former Foreign Affairs Minister and a key figure in Peru's historic defense before the Court at The Hague.

"His commitment to diplomacy left an indelible mark on our foreign policy," the Presidency of the Republic stated on social media.

"We remember with gratitude not only his brilliant career, but also his integrity and human warmth," it noted.

Likewise, the Presidential Office extended its condolences to the family and friends of Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde.


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of retired Ambassador Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006–2011) and served the homeland with distinction. 

"(...) whose legacy of commitment and dedication to Peru will endure in our diplomacy. We inform the public that books of condolence will be opened at the Torre Tagle headquarters and at Peru's embassies and consulates. We stand with his family and loved ones during this difficult time," the message posted on X stated.


Impeccable career

Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde served as Minister of Foreign Affairs throughout Alan Garcia's second presidential term (2006–2011), during which he led the institution responsible for managing Peru's relations with neighboring countries and the wider world.

From 2011 to 2014, Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde acted as Peru's co-agent before the International Court of Justice at The Hague in the maritime delimitation case between Peru and Chile.

Likewise, he promoted negotiations for Peru's integration into the Pacific Alliance, as well as various trade agreements and the conclusion of talks for the Trade Agreement with the European Union.

The approval by the U.S. Congress of the United States–Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (FTA) was also achieved, and he promoted the agreement within the framework of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

He also served as Director General and Adviser to the Andean Community, as well as Director of the Secretariat of the Cartagena Agreement Board.
