stated that the application of tariffs on Peruvian products in the United States has not had a significant impact on our national industry.
"The fishing sector has not been affected, nor have exports in general. However, the latest U.S. measures are under ongoing analysis," Gonzalez said on Tuesday during the First Produce Circular Summit to boost a sustainable economy in the South American country.
The Peruvian government official mentioned that a working group has been formed within the Executive Branch for this purpose.
It is composed of the Ministries of Production (Produce); Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur); Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), and Foreign Affairs.
In this regard, the Cabinet member pointed out that there are ongoing meetings with various business associations, such as the National Society of Industries, to analyze the effects on each productive sector.
Thus, the reciprocal 10% tariff applied by the United States to various countries, including Peru, has, at least for now, not affected Peruvian exports to the North American country.
Progress on roadmap
On this occasion, the Second Roadmap for the circular economy was presented, which will have a vision through 2030.
"The first roadmap was presented in 2020 and yielded promising results. For example, 40,000 micro and small enterprises in the country now incorporate circular economy components," he stated.
These companies have managed to incorporate circular economy components into their production processes, that is, a sustainability-oriented approach.
In this regard, Minister Gonzalez referred to the fishing industry.
"As a result of the waste from that industry, materials are being developed for the fashion industry, such as handbags, footwear, eyewear, among others," he indicated.
The minister emphasized that S/50 million (US$14.21 million) was allocated for the implementation of the roadmap through competitions organized by ProCompite and ProInnóvate.
New challenge
The government official explained the Ministry of Production is focusing on two sectors in the Second Roadmap: fishing and manufacturing.
"They are sectors that, throughout their entire production chain, have circular roadmaps that allow for improvements in production not only in quantitative terms but also qualitatively, with a sustainability-focused vision," he remarked.
The First Produce Circular Summit brought together authorities, representatives of international organizations, business leaders, and financial institutions to exchange experiences and present innovations.
It also aimed to propose solutions to strengthen the competitiveness of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises under an approach of clean production, efficient resource use, and reduced environmental impact.
The event provided summit participants with a range of financing instruments for the circular economy in business, resulting from the collaboration among the government, international cooperation, and business associations.
