The Consulate General of Peru in Los Angeles was instructed to coordinate with U.S. authorities for the repatriation of the remains of Peruvian citizen Sheylla Gutierrez, whose husband is listed as the main suspect in her murder.

In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that the costs of the transfer will be covered by the State of California. It added that efforts are also underway to waive airport fees at Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima.

Likewise, it was reported that the U.S. Embassy in Lima was formally notified of the arrest of the victim's husband, Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, the person allegedly responsible for Gutierrez's death.

In this regard, it was emphasized that the timeline for his handover to the authorities of the North American country could be substantially shortened if the judge approves the procedural measure of "simplified extradition."

In Lima, the victim's family was received by officials from the Directorate of Peruvian Communities Abroad and Consular Affairs, who informed them about the repatriation process of the body, as well as the procedures and timelines related to the extradition of the detainee.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again expressed its sorrow and condolences to Sheylla Gutierrez's relatives and reiterated its commitment to providing assistance to Peruvians abroad, especially those in vulnerable situations.

Last Wednesday, Cabrera Cornejo turned himself in to authorities at the Interpol Lima office accompanied by his lawyer.

On Thursday, the Lima Superior Court ordered his 9-month preventive detention, as he is the main suspect in the murder of Sheylla Gutierrez Rosillo in the United States.

The provisional imprisonment of the Peruvian national is for extradition purposes, as the disappearance and subsequent death of Gutierrez were reported in said country, the Judiciary indicated.

Security cameras had captured the accused carrying a package that matched Gutierrez's body, which was found in the Los Angeles National Forest on August 16.

On August 22, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office issued a formal arrest and extradition warrant against Cabrera, who is charged with murder and faces a possible sentence of up to life imprisonment.
