The Ministry of Culture announced on Friday the official reopening of the Capuliyoc–Cachora tourist route to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park, effective April 15, 2026, following a multisector technical meeting convened the previous day by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) in Cusco.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism; the Regional Office of Disaster Risk Management and Security; the Decentralized Subdirectorate of Cultural Heritage; the Security, National Defense, and Disaster Risk Management Unit; as well as the district mayors of Santa Teresa and San Pedro de Cachora.

The decision follows the completion of preventive maintenance, cleaning, and improvement works on access routes aimed at ensuring safe conditions for visitors.

Choquequirao Archaeological Park Chief Atilio Quispecusi reported that the Rio Blanco section is not passable, while the Capuliyoc–Cachora route shows favorable conditions following cleaning and maintenance work.

In turn, DDC Cusco Executive Director Maritza Rosa Candia said the reopening reflects the sector’s commitment to visitor safety and cultural heritage preservation.

"Maintenance work will ensure that tourists can access the archaeological park with all safety measures recommended by specialists," she noted.

Agreements

As part of the agreements, the preparation of technical reports and continuous monitoring of safety measures were established in order to ensure the route’s passability and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Coordination among the competent institutions, local governments, travel agencies, and communities will also be strengthened.

The session concluded with the signing of a record by all participating institutions, reaffirming their commitment to coordinated work aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage, as well as promoting safe and sustainable tourism in Cusco region.
