provided further details regarding the closure of the Ecuador-Peru border for three days due to the elections taking place in the neighboring country on February 9.
In this regard, the Cabinet member explained that the measure was adopted unilaterally through Presidential Decision 520. It aims to ensure security during the electoral process this Sunday.
He explained that this measure also includes the closure of that country's border with Colombia.
The restriction on both borders will apply for three days (from February 8 to 10) to allow the Ecuadorian Armed Forces to ensure citizen security during, before, and after the elections.
"This is a measure that is in accordance with international law; they (Ecuadorians) have important security reasons, living in a state of emergency, and that is why our Ecuadorian friends have their Armed Forces patrolling the streets, which we know is not normally the case, except under exceptional measures," Schialer indicated.
The Foreign Affairs sector's head also specified that Ecuador's citizens will be allowed to enter their country normally.
He added that Peruvians and other foreigners will not be prevented from leaving Ecuadorian territory on those days.
Schialer emphasized that his sector is very attentive and in coordination with its counterpart to ensure a prompt return to normalcy.
Lastly, on behalf of Peru, he expressed to the Ecuadorian people the wish that the elections be held in a peaceful, democratic, and transparent manner.
Remarks were made during a press conference following the Council of Ministers session on Wednesday afternoon.
