In a sad but joyfull farewell, the current Jorge Chavez International Airport hosted its final Christmas celebration this morning on its iconic terrace, which will close its doors in January 2025 when the new terminal, what is being built so close, opens its new doors.
Surprised and excited passengers paused their rush to snap photos with a blue-clad Santa Claus, who welcomed them just steps away from the entrance doors.
While some sought flight information, others took the opportunity to enjoy and film the colorful spectacle, organized by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), which featured a choir singing beloved Christmas carols.
Piero Lozada, LAP’s communications chief, explained that this show was part of the year-end festivities, with a particularly meaningful touch as it marks the last holiday event at an airport that will soon cease operations.
"It is indeed the last Christmas we celebrate at this airport, where so many stories have been written. The last 60 years of Peru’s history have passed through here. We wanted to leave with a joyful Peruvian touch, before moving to the new airport, which will begin operations on January 29, 2025," Lozada told TV Perú News program.
He highlighted that the new Jorge Chávez International Airport, which will be accessed exclusively via Morales Duárez Avenue, will create new memories for travelers.
"Our goal is to ensure that starting in January 29, the new airport with entrance via Morales Duarez, many more stories will be written, and we will continue to be the gateway to Peru and the connection to the world," he said.
He also shared that the new terminal will be three times the size of the current one and will be able to manage 40 million passengers annually.
