The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, on Monday paid tribute to Peruvian Nobel Prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa, who passed away the day before.

Within this framework, the top official stated that the writer was a "genius of letters" who had "a homeland" in France.

"Mario Vargas Llosa belonged to France, through the Academy (French Academy), through his love for our literature (...) With his work, he opposed freedom to fanaticism, irony to dogma, a tenacious ideal in the face of the storms of the century," the French president declared via X referring to the Francophile writer, who was elected to the French Academy in 2021.

The institution for the promotion of the French language, founded in 1635, issued a statement to announce his death.

"The Perpetual Secretary and the members of the French Academy are saddened to announce the passing of their colleague, Mario Vargas Llosa, which occurred on April 13, 2025, in Lima (Peru). He was 89 years old. He was elected on November 25, 2021, to occupy the seat of Michel Serres (18th seat)," it stated.
