Peru expects to sign the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Hong Kong this week, as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum being held in Lima.

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon indicated that improvements to the trade agreement existing between Peru and the People's Republic of China are expected to be finalized in the coming days as well.

"We are expecting to be able to sign the optimization of the FTA with China this week, which will allow us to renew this 14-year free trade agreement consisting of 7 chapters. We have added 5 more, and the original 7 have also been upgraded for the benefit of both economies," Leon told reporters.

"We will also sign the FTA with Hong Kong," she noted from Lima Convention Center, the venue for APEC Leaders' Week.

"These are important expectations because all of this attracts investment and improves our exports," the minister pointed out.

Additionally, the Cabinet member stated that her sector has been working on multiple fronts to consolidate exports and tourism.

Innovation, competitiveness, digitalization, and formalization are also being promoted through an intersectoral initiative.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
