Peru's Defense Min participates in U.S. Southern Command leadership change ceremony

Defense Minister Walter Astudillo participated in the change of leadership ceremony of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

The Peruvian Ministry of Defense reported that his presence was aimed at strengthening cooperation ties in the field of defense and national security between the two countries.

This ceremony took place in Doral, Florida, on Thursday.


At this event, U.S. Navy Admiral Alvin Holsey was recognized as the new commander of SOUTHCOM, succeeding Laura Richardson, who retired after nearly 40 years of service.

Through the aforementioned military body, Peru and the United States cooperate in aspects such as military exercises, disaster risk management, technological assistance, training, among others.

The Peruvian Ministry of Defense noted that such meetings and ceremonies strengthen the strategic relationship between both countries, allowing for continuous cooperation in defense and security.


Authorized trip

Minister Astudillo's trip to the United States was authorized by Supreme Resolution No. 231-2024-PCM.

It emphasized that these activities in the North American country are of institutional interest to strengthen mutual trust.

This trip did not incur any expenses to the Peruvian treasury, as the costs were covered by the U.S. Government.
