Chavin de Huantar: The Rescue of the Century is on its way to become Peru’s most-watched film of the year. During its opening weekend, the production captivated more than 200,000 moviegoers across the country.

Directed by Diego de León and starring Rodrigo Sánchez Patiño and André Silva, the film delivers a gripping mix of drama and action through a straightforward yet emotionally charged narrative that has deeply resonated with audiences.

Over the weekend, Chavin de Huantar trended on X and Instagram, as users shared clips singing Peru’s National Anthem in packed theaters.

The film revisits the events of December 17, 1996, when members of the MRTA guerrilla group took hundreds of hostages —including government ministers and military officials— inside the Japanese ambassador’s residence in Lima.

For 126 days, Peru held its breath as the Army secretly planned Operation Chavín de Huántar, a daring rescue mission led by Commander Juan Valer.

To ensure authenticity, the production team gathered firsthand testimonies from the operation’s participants and used meticulously recreated sets, genuine period weapons, and historically accurate costumes.
