18:35 | Cusco (Cusco region), Oct. 18.
The
Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco has ordered the total closure of the Inca Trail Route 1 to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for three days starting today, October 18, due to a forest fire and the constant rock fall in the area.
According to a report, the forest fire is spreading across the sectors of Tunasmoqo, Unumaqchi, Wanomachay, Chaquilambras, Cruzmoqo, Chaquimayo, and Hatunchaca, which affects a 2km length, resulting in a rock fall along the Inca Trail.
For this reason, it is considered an area of high vulnerability for tourists, porters, and locals.
On Tuesday, at around 3:30 p.m., rocks fell on the trail, which put tourists, members of the forest fire brigade, and porters at risk.
Therefore, security measures have been implemented to ensure the physical integrity of visitors.
Over the course of three days, since its closure, the trail at the Tarayoq sector will be refurbished. Besides, two bridges will be opened, providing a new access to the trail, including safety handrails.
While the traditional route is closed, visitor groups can access the trail through Route 5, also known as the Sacred Trail.
Forest firefighters from the Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu remain vigilant to control emergencies that may arise.
