The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo met with a delegation of 25 university representatives from all over the country, with whom he discussed their main concerns and pledged support to improve higher education in Peru.

"As a teacher, I can say that I am aware of these problems, and I can affirm that many (of them) are historical. For years, it has been talked about labor and infrastructure-related issues without providing any solutions, but that must come to an end," he expressed.

According to the Head of State, it is necessary to establish a plan that sets common objectives and determines the ways to meet the goals with the aim of solving these problems.

"Through you, I ask you to convene the rest of universities in the country to hold a national event that allows the voice of all Peruvian students to be heard; no university should be left behind," he remarked.

Furthermore, the Head of State affirmed that his administration has been promoting on various fronts the creation of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Research, which will contribute to increasing the development and scientific activity nationwide, especially in the university curricula.

"We are going to fight so that, through this ministry, those subjects that make us think and analyze (various aspects) can return (…)," he said.

Lastly, the top official thanked university students for their initiative to visit him at the Lima-based Government Palace and affirmed that a second visit will be coordinated in the short term so as to establish the agenda of commitments.

Representatives of the University Federation of San Marcos, Student Federation of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Association of Student Centers of the National University of Engineering, and Federated Center of Social Sciences and Humanities of the National University of Education Enrique Guzman y Valle (La Cantuta) participated in the meeting.

The event was also attended by spokespersons for the Student Council of Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University (UARM), Student Federation of Cesar Vallejo University (UCV), Critical Conscience of San Martin de Porres University (USMP), Student Federation of the Agrarian University, and Student Center of Administrative Sciences Faculty at the National University of Callao (UNAC).
