A call for calm to the population was issued Thursday morning by the
, following a 6.9-magnitude earthquake registered in Ayaviri (Puno region), which was also felt in other areas of southern Peru.
Via its official Twitter account, the presidential office indicated that the Government is coordinating with corresponding entities the assessment of personal and material damage.
"We call on the population to remain calm in the face of possible aftershocks," it warned.
This seismic event had an intensity III-IV in Ayaviri. It was felt in Puno, Juliaca, Melgar, Sandia, and Carabaya as well.
It was also perceived in Arequipa, Cusco, Tacna, Moquegua, and Apurimac regions, causing alarm among the population.
