Peru carries forward one of the most advanced vaccination processes against COVID-19 in Latin America, Health Minister Jorge Lopez highlighted during his participation in the 75th World Health Assembly organized by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"It is important to highlight that Peru is leading one of the widest vaccination processes against COVID-19 in Latin America, ranking third in the region, in terms of percentage of the population protected against coronavirus," Peña said during this event, which takes place in the Swiss city of Geneva from May 22 to 28.

The Cabinet member pointed out that, although the health crisis has left lessons and new challenges to prevent future pandemics, it is important that new global reflections work on strengthening a new international health instrument which guarantees universal access to health without discrimination.

Along these lines, the Minister said Peru is convinced that a new international instrument must have as its main pillar the principle of equity, which allows guaranteeing universal access to other medical measures such as vaccines without discrimination or privileges.

"And that it addresses issues related to research and development, intellectual property, technology transfer, as well as the expansion of local and regional manufacturing capacity against medical measures during the emergency," he added.

Concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has had global repercussions, the Peruvian government official stressed the importance of living in a world of peace to fight against adversities such as, for example, the serious health crisis.

The Cabinet member said it is not possible to provide public health programs that guarantee people's well-being in a society where there is no peace.

Finally, Lopez reiterated Peru's commitment to constructively support efforts so as to strengthen global, regional, and national capacities for preparation and response to health measures and future pandemics.

"The global crisis, like the one we are currently facing, requires local responses. Peru is convinced that the strengthening of rules-based multilateralism is essential for facing the global challenges that call into question human rights protection, access to health, as well as the maintenance of health and safety," he pointed out.

The Health Ministry reminds citizens that the World Health Assembly is the WHO body with the highest decision. It is attended by delegations from its 194 member states.

In the case of Peru, the delegation was led by Health Minister Lopez and included the participation of the
Ministerial Office's Chief of Staff Juan Carlos Delgado.
