Peru: Indigenous community to export Morikke chestnuts into foreign markets

00:00 | Tres Islas (Madre de Dios), Mar. 19.

Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez has reiterated the Central Government's commitment to boosting development in rainforest Madre de Dios region.

In this sense, he said strengthening exporting and tourism activities is a key priority because —in addition to economic benefits— they generate jobs.

"Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has clearly expressed the Government's firm willingness to develop Madre de Dios' huge potential. The Central Government's commitment was demonstrated by the important operation held in the area known as La Pampa," he affirmed.

Vasquez said his working visit to the area includes several meetings and visits to different companies and tourist sites in order to identify problems and come up with solutions.

"The Government is conducting multisectoral efforts. Mincetur plays a clearly supportive role for tourism sector agents and has only one commitment: the region's sustainable development," he underlined.

Morikke chestnuts

The Tres Islas indigenous community was authorized by the Government to use the "Morikke" collective mark. Through it, locals will be able to export Peru's Amazon chestnuts to the most important markets in the world.

As is known, Madre de Dios is home to the largest number of chestnut trees in the Inca country, which is enough to make commercial use of the fruit.

The Amazon chestnut has unique features that distinguish it from the rest, due to its appearance and texture.

This peeled and dehydrated chestnut has a smooth and clean skin. Besides, it has a rigid and compact consistency as well as a characteristic color, smell, and taste.
