The majority of foreign travelers visiting Peru come from Europe, the United States, and Mexico, Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Apavit) Chairman Ricardo Acosta affirmed on Saturday.

Among European countries, Spain and Germany stand out as countries of origin.

"They (visitors) arrive in Lima, but the majority of these international travelers visit our main tourist attraction, Machu Picchu," he told Andina news agency.

Likewise, Acosta mentioned that another group of tourists prefer places located in the jungle, where Tarapoto (San Martin region) stands out due to its tourist attractions and good weather.

Gastronomy

Furthermore, the chairman indicated that Arequipa draws a significant group of foreign travelers because of its varied cuisine and attractions in the city.

"One of the main attributes of our country is the recognition of its rich and varied gastronomy (…)," the Apavit representative expressed.

However, Acosta said the influx of international tourists currently accounts for only 10% of the registered figures compared to pre-pandemic levels.

"It is evident that receptive tourism is being harshly affected by the pandemic and sanitary restrictions," he added.
