APEC Senior Officials' Meetings Chairman, Ambassador Carlos Vasquez, emphasized the very active negotiations currently taking place in Peru, aiming to approve four key deliverables (documents) during the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Week.

During a press conference held at Lima Convention Center on Tuesday, he provided an update on the latest Senior Officials' Meeting, which took place prior to the start of the upcoming Leaders' Summit.

"There are what we call negotiation sessions. At this moment, there are very active negotiations underway to achieve consensus on four key deliverables to close out the year 2024," he stated.

Ambassador Vasquez noted that among the documents are the Joint Statement by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Leaders' Declaration, as well as two other deliverables focused on transitioning towards a formal and global economy, and a renewed approach to the APEC Free Trade Area.

Regarding these deliverables, he specified that the first would be the "most emblematic and representative of Peru's year in the APEC hosting."

Meanwhile, the free trade area document is being updated to equip member economies with the capabilities to negotiate such agreements among themselves.

Ambassador Vasquez explained that the final APEC Senior Officials' Meeting reviewed all the outcomes achieved throughout the current year.

The diplomat also mentioned that a report was presented on the results of 'APEC for the People' initiative, which took place in various Peruvian cities.

"The APEC for the People Initiative was highly successful, with over 140 events held, and more are planned for the end of this year. This initiative had a positive impact on nearly half a million Peruvians and was very well received. We showcased this national experience, which will be replicated in the coming years," he added.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
