President Dina Boluarte on Friday stated that the budget for public universities increased from S/4.7 billion (US$1.249 billion) in 2022 to S/6.9 billion (US$1.302 billion) in 2024, a 47% growth that represents the Government's commitment to higher education.

"We are betting on laying the foundations for an educational system that combines innovation and territoriality, showing that regions like Madre de Dios not only have natural wealth but also human talent to lead great changes," she indicated.

The Head of State participated in the ceremony to enact the law that creates new professional careers at Universidad Nacional Amazonica de Madre de Dios (National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios).

This event was attended by Congress Chairman Eduardo Salhuana and Education Minister Morgan Quero.

During her speech, the top official mentioned that the S/800 (US$213) salary increase for university teachers was completed. Similarly, 625 full-time teachers and researchers from 46 public universities benefited from special bonuses aimed at fostering research, with an investment of S/20 million (US$5.31 million).

"This year, we plan to benefit a total of 864 research professors, thanks to an investment of nearly S/31 million (US$8.23 million)," she noted, after reaffirming her commitment to doubling the number of Beca 18 (scholarship) offers to 20,000.

Joint Efforts

The President said that the expansion to nearly 17 programs at the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios reflects the joint efforts by all levels of government and State-run institutions to strengthen Peru’s public university offerings.

"This is what we do with the Congress of the Republic, regional governors, mayors, and other institutions. We don't need to fight because the goal is the same: the well-being of more than 34 million Peruvians," Mrs. Boluarte expressed.

The top official said that if there is hatred, there is no trust, as she reiterated her call for unity, dialogue, and continued work in a coordinated manner, because that is how the nation wins.

"Nothing and no one will stop the Government in its pursuit of development," she pointed out.

Moreover, President Boluarte highlighted that the economic recovery in 2024 is the outcome of efforts by housewives, professionals, academics, institutions, merchants, fishermen, and all those who contributed to overcoming the 2023 recession caused by a social crisis.

"This Government works hand-in-hand with institutions elected in accordance with the Constitution, such as Congress, regional governments, and mayors, but also with a call for unity and sincere dialogue for the sake of the country. We will continue to bet on development and quality education at universities," she stated.

Amazonian University

Lastly, the President emphasized that thanks to the law enacted today, the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios will open its doors to a greater number of professional careers for the advancement of said region's youth and their families.

It will offer new programs such as Human Medicine, Forestry Engineering, Environmental Studies, Law and Political Science, Psychology, among others.
