Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Tuesday described the meeting with Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) representatives in Washington, D.C., as positive. Justice and Human Rights Minister Eduardo Arana also participated in the event.

"Peru reaffirmed its strong commitment to remain in the Inter-American Human Rights System and, within that framework, also defend the country's own interests," Schialer said in remarks to RPP Noticias.

The ambassador stated that, in matters of human rights, the Peruvian State will act in a way that is in accordance with the international obligations it has assumed, "but also in line with the possibilities, as well as the social, political, and economic realities that affect Peruvian society as a whole."

On that occasion, the ministers discussed with IACHR Chairwoman Roberta Clarke, and Country Rapporteur Stuardo Ralon the situation in Peru and its relationship with the inter-American organization.

They also addressed the possibility of establishing a monitoring mechanism for the report prepared by the IACHR in the context of the social protests.

Deportations

The diplomat indicated that consular personnel visit detention centers themselves to ensure this, and especially to make sure that those who already hold a final deportation order do not have to remain for extended periods, even months, in said facilities.

"The individuals returning to Peru (from the United States), I estimate, are, and will continue to be, around 200 to 300 monthly. We are talking about two, maybe three flights (per month)," he detailed.
