The
on Thursday stated that her administration supports and safeguards the rights of Peruvian National Police (PNP) agents in recognition of their role in protecting and serving citizens.
Mrs. Boluarte made these remarks during the commissioning ceremony of junior service officers of the PNP, who are joining with the rank of captain and will be responsible for legally defending agents facing complaints.
"We are a government that supports its Peruvian National Police and safeguards their rights in recognition of their noble duty to protect and serve the citizenry. We are clear when we say that agents who bravely risk their lives to defend society against crime cannot be criminalized," she expressed.
In this regard, the top official stated that, together with the Ministry of Interior, they have launched a program to assimilate 200 officer-lawyers who will be responsible for defending police agents against complaints filed by criminals and certain NGOs.
"Thus, we strengthen our commitment to the National Police. Never again will any of you be abandoned or left to your fate; injustices are over. Never again will you stand alone against those who defend criminals. That is why this new group is so important," she said.
The Head of State explained that these assimilated officers will ensure the legal defense of police personnel, who are properly trained to litigate in court against the irrational attempts of certain individuals to imprison an agent for using their service weapon in the line of duty.
"Never again will law enforcement agents be imprisoned for using their weapons in accordance with police procedures. We are a Government that stands with the National Police, modernizing it and providing the necessary tools to fight crime, one of which is legal defense," she added.
At another moment, Mrs. Boluarte specified that, alongside economic growth, she will not waver in the task of building a safer country.
"We are a government of deeds and actions, and just as we pledged to unblock projects and reactivate the economy, we fight crime relentlessly. On July 28, we will tell the nation: mission accomplished, and we will hand over a country different from the one we inherited," she concluded.
