The Minister of Energy and Mines, Jorge Montero, announced the upcoming launch of the “Iquitos Solar” project, that will allow supplying electricity to the population in the Amazonian region of Loreto.
“I announce a project that we will call ‘Iquitos Solar’. We are going to establish, analyze and make a reality a three-phase and home energy platform in Iquitos, based on solar energy,” he said on the Regional Communication Network (RCR).
“We need solar energy and three-phase electricity for the Iquitos-Nauta axis,” he added.
Jorge Montero explained that this project will be a reality thanks to the approval in the Congress of the Republic of
modernization of Law No. 28832
(Law to ensure the efficient development of electric generation), which will allow all available generation technologies (hydroelectric, thermal, solar, wind, biomass and others) to compete transparently in electricity supply tenders.
“The modernization of Law No. 28832 now enables us and makes it possible to announce the 'Iquitos Solar' project, which allows us to generate solar fields and renewable energy accumulators for industrial and residential services in Iquitos without affecting the environment,” he said.
“We have this law signed by the Executive that will allow wind and solar sources to be integrated into the set of energies that are marketed on the network,” he added.
The minister said that solar energy is now recognized as having a firm potential, meaning that all the energy that Peru can produce will be on the grid for commercialization.
“This law, which we have waited four years in Parliament, now allows us to move forward quickly,” he said.
