A new Peruvian panettone made with scent of coffee and cocoa has been released to the local market for Christmas time, prepared by Amazonian communities with support from the Government in an effort to boost economic development and innovation.

The Ashaninka and Nomatsigenga Indigenous Agroindustrial Cooperative “Asi Omagaro Kanuja” (We are all Kanuja in Nomatsigenga language) and the Nomatsigenga Producers Association of the San Antonio de Sonomoro Native Community (APANOSAN) have launched this panettone made with ingredients grown in the Amazonian district of Pangoa, Junin region.

This initiative is made possible by baking modules implemented by the National Commision for Development and Drug-Free Life (DEVIDA), which provides specialized technical assistance to indigenous communities.

Through these modules, 258 Asháninka and Nomatsigenga families have diversified their production, creating products such as panettone, cakes, and other baked goods, using agricultural resources from the Amazonian Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers Valley (VRAEM).

The artisanal panettone stands out for its coffee essence and chocolate chips, sourced directly from crops in the local communities. This product not only represents an innovative alternative but also boosts the economy of indigenous families and highlights the sustainable farming practices of Vraem.

Roxana Chimanga Shumpate, a producer from the San Antonio de Sonomoro Native Community, emphasized the initiative's impact: "These panettones not only improve our quality of life but also show the world that we can innovate and create new income sources from within our communities, using what the land provides us".

This unique product combines tradition, quality, and the authentic flavors of the indigenous peoples of the central jungle. It is now available for the 2024 Holiday season.

DEVIDA has implemented 10 baking modules across Ayacucho, Cusco, and Junín to strengthen sustainable development in the indigenous communities of Vraem.
