Following the passing of former President Alberto Fujimori at age 86, the Peruvian Government has declared three days of national mourning and granted him the funeral honors that correspond to a President of the Republic in office.

What does national mourning mean?

National mourning involves the suspension of official events and festive activities, in memory of deceased authorities or individuals and for the holding of funeral services.

National mourning days are merely protocol ones; they do not imply the suspension of activities in the public or private sector, nor are they considered holidays.

How many days of mourning were declared for Fujimori?

The Government of President Dina Boluarte declared three days of national mourning (September 12, 13, and 14) due to his passing and under the provisions of State and Regional Ceremonial regulations.

It also ordered that the former top official be granted the funeral honors that correspond a President of the Republic in office.

During these three days, the National Flag will be hoisted at half-mast at public buildings, military bases, Navy ships, police establishments, and other State-run agencies, both in Peru and in diplomatic-consular missions abroad.

Starting today, the Government Palace, the Congress of the Republic, and the Municipality of Lima have the national flag at half-mast in homage to Fujimori.

The wake for Fujimori will start this Thursday morning at the Ministry of Culture in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

The funeral will continue until Saturday, September 14, when his remains will be transferred to Campo Fe Cemetery in Huachipa, where they will receive Christian burial.
