The Presidency of the Republic on Wednesday evening lamented the passing of 86-year-old former President Alberto Fujimori, and conveyed condolences to his family.

This message was issued by the Presidential Office on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

"The Presidency of the Republic laments the sorrowful passing of former President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori Fujimori. (We extend) our heartfelt condolences to the family, whom we join in their profound grief. May God receive him into His glory and may he rest in peace," the statement said.

Fujimori died this afternoon after a tough battle with cancer, according to his daughter Keiko.

As is known, the former president (1990-2000) was sentenced in 2009 by the Special Criminal Court to 25 years in prison for being considered the indirect perpetrator of the deaths of attendees at a gathering in Lima's Barrios Altos neighborhood (1991) and students from La Cantuta University (1992) —crimes perpetrated by intelligence service agents from the Colina detachment.

The Supreme Court upheld the 25-year sentence in 2010.

Alberto Fujimori had been held at Barbadillo Prison located within the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Special Operations Directorate (Dinoes) facilities in Lima's Ate district since his extradition from Chile in September 2007.
