United States President Joe Biden highlighted on Friday, during his meeting with Peruvian counterpart Dina Boluarte, the increased cooperation with Peru, and emphasized the US$65 million aid that the North American country will provide to the recipient in the fight against drug trafficking, including the delivery of nine Black Hawk helicopters.

The U.S. top official affirmed that Peru is an "important and valued partner" for the United States.

Likewise, Mr. Biden underscored the challenges both countries face "in defending democracy and protecting the environment."

He jokingly remarked that the Andean country is so beautiful he fears his team might want to stay.

The U.S. President —who arrived in Lima on Thursday afternoon to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting— highlighted the support agreed upon for California commuter rail line Caltrain to donate 150 passenger cars and locomotives for the Lima Metro project, which is still under construction.

Mrs. Boluarte —who was accompanied by most of her Cabinet led by Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen and Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialerexpressed her gratitude to Mr. Biden for his visit and the "mutual interest in the APEC forum."

Washington on Friday afternoon announced that counter-narcotics assistance includes the "transfer of nine Black Hawk helicopters to Peru over the next five years," in addition to the resumption of the non-lethal aerial interception agreement for the first time in 10 years, allowing for the interception of suspected drug-trafficking aircraft without shooting them down.

Additionally, the United States will provide technical assistance, as well as three cargo vehicle customs inspection scanners, worth over US$8.5 million, for the Chancay Port. The latter was inaugurated by Mrs. Boluarte and Chinese President Xi Jinping last Thursday, a milestone in China's economic influence in South America.
