A total of 7.7 tons of drugs, seized in various police operations nationwide, were burned early in the morning by Peruvian authorities in Lima.

The incineration session took place at the National Police Special Operations Unit (Diroes) headquarters in Ate district, and was led by Peru’s Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio.

Among destructed narcotics were cocaine base (2,844 kg), cocaine hydrochloride (3,571 kg), marijuana (1,341 kg) and opium latex (5 kg), and poppy (1 kg).

The burning process also featured Deputy Minister of Internal Order Ruben Vargas, National Police Director-General Vicente Romero, and representatives of the Judiciary, Devida and other organizations involved in the fight against drugs.

Several drug busts were made all over Peru between July and October this year and this is the first official incineration of illegal substances under Kuczynski’s administration.

After monitoring the act, Basombrio said the police has made significant achievements in combating drug trafficking. He also said his administration is strongly committed to reducing the production of drugs.
