Peru: Monetary poverty rose to 29% in 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) on Thursday reported that monetary poverty affected 29% of Peru's population in 2023, thus registering an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to 2022 (27.5%).

In urban areas, monetary poverty was 26.4%, an increase of 2.3 percentage points compared to the previous year; meanwhile, it stood at 39.8% in rural areas, thus decreasing 1.3 percentage points.

INEI specified that the population living in poverty reached 9,780,000 citizens, which is 596,000 more than the year 2022 (9,184,000 people).

Likewise, the institute announced that the population in extreme poverty situation was 5.7% in 2023, thus affecting 1,922,000 people. This figure means 249,000 more citizens than in 2022 (1,673,000).

Income and expenses

Real income per inhabitant decreased 1.0% between 2022 and 2023; it declined from S/1,160 (US$312) to S/1,148 (US$309).

Real income per inhabitant in the rest of urban areas went down by 3.0%, going from S/1,241 (US$334) to S/1,204 (US$324).

However, it rose 0.7% from S/1,323 (US$356) to S/1,332 (US$358) in Metropolitan Lima and Callao region, followed by rural areas (+0.3%), going from S/699 (US$187) to S/700 (US$188).

Meanwhile, real monthly spending per inhabitant was reduced 0.7%, going from S/872 (US$234) in 2022 to S/866 (US$233) in 2023.

In Metropolitan Lima and Callao region, real monthly per capita spending was reduced by 0.4%, from S/972 (US$261) to S/968 (US$260) for 2022 and 2023, followed by the rest of urban areas (-1.8%), decreasing from S/935 (US$251) to S/917 (US$247). However, it increased by 1.4% in rural areas, going from S/561 (US$151) to 569 (US$153).

Basic food basket

Of the total of 110 main products that make up the basic food basket, 95 experienced price increases, the prices of seven went down, and eight showed no variation.
