09:10 | Lima, Jan. 30.

Sweden reinforces its commitment to bolstering trade and diplomatic relations with Peru, in an official visit led by Swedish Foreign Affairs Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, along with a delegation of senior executives from Swedish companies focused on mining.

On January 30 and 31, the representatives will participate in key meetings and events with the aim of exploring new opportunities for collaboration related to mining and sustainable development.

"Peru is a strategic partner for Sweden in Latin America due to its sustained economic growth and the Peruvian mining sector's commitment to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly practices," said Jesper Bernhardsson, Business Sweden's Regional Manager for Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

"Our goal is to foster bilateral trade that benefits both nations, promoting sustainability and innovation," he added.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The agenda includes meetings between Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and senior Peruvian government officials. These meetings seek to expand collaboration in strategic economic and social areas for both countries, such as mining and sustainable development.

As part of the highlighted activities, the Peru-Sweden Mining Summit will be held at the Embassy of Finland in Lima today at 3:30 p.m. (local time).

This private event will bring together Swedish and Peruvian companies to discuss the future of resource extraction in terms of sustainability, innovation, and territorial development, promoting sustainable mining and international collaboration.

Presence of Swedish Companies in Peru

Currently, more than 25 Swedish companies operate in Peru, covering sectors such as retail (H&M), automotive (Volvo and Scania), and mining (ABB, Sandvik, Epiroc, among others).

These firms stand out for their commitment to innovation and sustainability, providing advanced technological solutions and contributing to Peru's economic development.

Enterprises participating in the trade mission on January 30-31 include: ABB, Atlas Copco, Ecogain, Epiroc, Quant Service, Sandvik, Scania, as well as organizations such as the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR).

Historic Diplomatic Relations

Peru and Sweden have maintained ongoing diplomatic relationship for almost 90 years, established in 1938.

In recent years, these relations have been strengthened with high-level official visits, such as the presence of Princess Victoria in 2015 and bilateral meetings between foreign ministers from both countries.

According to figures from the Peruvian State-run Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion), Sweden's direct investment in Peru reached US$50 million as of 2023.

"The relationship between Sweden and Peru is an example of mutually beneficial cooperation. Our vision is to continue building a future of shared prosperity, exploring new business opportunities that strengthen the ties between our nations," Bernhardsson concluded.

Trade Balance

According to information from the ADEX Data Trade Intelligence System, Peruvian exports to Sweden reached US$101 million between January and September 2024, exceeding the US$93 million of the same period in 2023.

Major goods include traditional products such as agricultural items, oil, and minerals, along with textiles and agro-industrial ones.

In turn, imports from Sweden amounted to US$200 million, with metal-mechanical, chemical, and steel products being the most important.
