The Peruvian Government expressed its confidence that the significant cooperation provided by the United States to Peru over the past 62 years will be adequately evaluated, in accordance with the main objectives and interests shared by both countries.

This was stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in relation to the measures announced by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the international development aid provided by his country and its potential effects on Peru.

The statement specified that the suspension of disbursements for a 90 day-period, while the re-evaluation announced by President Trump is carried out, affects all U.S. international cooperation projects worldwide.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer confirmed that the United States had suspended aid to Peru in programs managed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In an interview with Radio Exitosa, the Peruvian Cabinet member said that on January 20, during the inauguration of the Trump administration, an executive order was issued to reassess, refocus, or realign U.S. foreign aid.

However, the ambassador considered it unlikely that a withdrawal of funds would occur.

The diplomat also said that foreign aid will not be eliminated in critical U.S. national security matters.
