The Government of Peru on Friday night congratulated Mark Carney on his appointment as Prime Minister of Canada.

"Peru and Canada share strong friendship and cooperation ties, which we will continue to strengthen for the benefit of both nations," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated via social media.

Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada, was sworn in as Prime Minister last Friday.

Thus, he succeeds Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January and remained in office until his successor was elected.

The new Prime Minister begins his tenure amid a trade war triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In one of his first actions, Mark Carney canceled the unpopular consumer carbon tax just hours after taking office.
