Peru terminated Jorge Fossati on Thursday after the veteran soccer coach failed to resuscitate the country's hapless bid to reach the 2026 World Cup tournament.

Fossati, 74, was hired in December 2023 after Peru had managed just two points from six qualifiers under the guidance of Juan Reynoso.

Peru ranked 10th and last in the South American qualifying table then. That is where it remains now with merely seven points from 12 games.

"Jorge Fossati will not continue his mission as coach of the Peruvian national team," the Peruvian Soccer Federation announed.

The team is a long way off the sixth and final qualifying spot currently occupied by Paraguay on 17 points, with six matches left.

The South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada resumes in March.
